Under the responsibility of the Seasonal Ferries Director and under the supervision of the local manager, the captain is the person in command and charge of the new vessel that will carry freight across the Saint-Augustin River. He will act as a representative of the STQ and he will be the resource person for the Office. He oversees the application of the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and its regulations as well as environmental rules. He must always comply with the standards and procedures of the Safety Management System (SMS) in force at STQ. The captain shall take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of any person, property and the environment. More specifically, the captain must ensure the conduct of the vessel between the Village of Saint-Augustin and Pointe-à-la-Truite (Trout-Point) Federal dock and supervise all the cargo handling, ground transportation operations from pick-up to delivery ensuring the customer needs while respecting the priority of perishable goods. He supervises the crew in their respective functions, provides monthly emergency drills and ensures that safety equipment is maintained, certified and functioning properly. During wintertime, the freight transportation is done by different vehicles and snowmobiles. Finally, if necessary, the captain will perform various tasks related to the job. The captain will start the operation in the 2020 season but may be required to start working and/or training before the beginning of the navigation season. A familiarization / training session will be planned. Work schedule: Average of 40 hours /week

Exigences requises


  • Certificate of Master limited, 60 gross tonnage or more or equivalent certification (Fishing Master, Fourth Class);
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED - STCW Basic Safety certificate);
  • Simulated electronic navigation Limited (SEN-L);
  • Restricted Radio Operator's Certificate-Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC);
  • Valid Marine Basic First Aid certificate;
  • Valid Marine Medical certificate issued by Transport Canada;
  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience - an asset;
  • Valid driving licence;
  • Driving of equipment experience - an asset (forklifts, snowmobiles, excavators...);
  • Knowledge of software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) - an asset;
  • Meet the physical requirements of the job.

Any other combination of relevant education and experience may be considered. The candidate who has demonstrated his interest and ability to work, could have to follow a training program supported by the STQ to obtain the required patent.
