NM Mécatina II Interruption of Service for Dry Dock

Québec, September 7, 2016 – The Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) wishes to inform its clientele that the barge Mécatina II, which provides cargo transportation between Harrington Harbour and Chevery on the Lower North Shore, will be removed from its service in the first week of December, on or around December 5, 2016, in order to go into dry dock in Sept-Îles.

This early termination of the cargo transportation season is due to the closing of the Parc d’Hivernage de Sept-Îles on December 10, 2016.

The STQ understands that this situation will bring some challenges for the community, and is working on putting in place a temporary service to replace the barge until the conditions no longer allow navigation.  However, such service, if possible to implement, could be different from the current service, and not enable the transportation of vehicles or oversized cargo.

In light of these circumstances, the STQ strongly encourages the population to plan ahead, and to order and transport their winter goods and other priority merchandise, as well as all oversized and heavy cargo, as soon as possible, to make sure they can be transported before the NM Mécatina II leaves for Sept-Îles.

In any case, please note that the barge will be back in service in the Spring of 2017, after the ice melts, to undertake its regular season.

More information will be disclosed when we have more details on the temporary service.  The STQ would like to thank the population for their understanding of this situation.
